Commemorative service to mark centenary of women’s vote and World War One
A commemorative service organised by by Northumberland County Council will be held this Friday to celebrate 100 years since some women were given the vote and the role women played in WW1.
The event is open to the public and will take place on Friday (14th) St Mary’s Church in Morpeth at 12pm.
The service will reflect on the changes that have been made since 1918 relating to the vote and the role women women played in WW1. It will include thoughts and views from students of nearby schools.
After the service members of the public are encouraged to walk to the grave of Emily Wilding Davison, one of the most important people in the suffragette movement, where a festive floral spray will be laid.
A militant fighter for her cause, Emily was arrested and imprisoned for her part in demonstrations and activities in support of the Women’s Social and Political Union. In September this year a statue of Emily, commissioned by the council, was unveiled in Carlisle Park.
Following the church service a short reception will be held at the Story Park Community Centre.
Cllr Cath Homer, cabinet member for Culture, Arts, Leisure and Tourism said: “This year we have honoured and commemorated the incredible role women played not only in WW1 but also in bringing about change for the future.
“I can think of no better way to bring the year to a close than with this special commemorative service culminating in the laying of a wreath at the grave of our own Emily Wilding Davison, one of the most important women in the suffragette movement.
“We would like to extend the invite to anyone who would like to mark this special year to come and join us in Morpeth this Friday.”
Cllr Veronica Jones, cabinet member for Adult Wellbeing and Health at the council added: “Throughout my career I have been inspired by people like Emily, who proved that if you want something you can achieve it through hard work and dedication.
“Now, because of their actions we can continue to inspire the younger generation of girls and women to strive to be their best and achieve their goals.”
