County Council offering six week course to help people achieve healthier lifestyle
A free healthy eating programme has been launched for people looking to achieve lasting weight loss and wellbeing.
The unique 6-week course called ‘Weigh to Go’ has been developed by experts in nutrition and is based on the latest scientific evidence.
Consisting of weekly one-hour online sessions, the course will help participants to start and maintain healthier habits to achieve a healthy weight. The online programme, delivered by Health Trainers in Northumberland County Council’s public health service, is open to adults across the county.
Participants will learn about eating well, food labelling, fats and sugars, unhealthy eating triggers and how to choose healthy options when eating out.
Northumberland County Councillor Wendy Pattison, cabinet member for Adult Wellbeing, said: “Many of us struggle with our weight from time to time. And we know cost has always played a significant role in our food choices. The current cost-of-living crisis means the price of food will be even more at the forefront of people’s minds. Highly processed foods are cheaper than healthier foods, making them an understandable choice for families struggling financially.
“However, being overweight or obese significantly increases a person’s risk of having a stroke, hypertension, high cholesterol, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes so it is really important to try and maintain a healthy weight.
“This course is both free and widely accessible so why not start 2023 as you mean to go one. This is a great way to learn about healthy food choices and will help residents to lead healthier and happier lives as a result. And if you sign up in December or January you have the chance to win a slow cooker.“
Participants who sign up in December or January and attend all 6 sessions will be entered into a free prize draw, with a chance of winning a slow cooker.
