Cramlington’s new Man Shed is proving to be just the tonic!

Cramlington’s new Man Shed is proving to be just the tonic for men (and women) seeking to gain new skills, friendship, and mental health support.
The enterprise was set up by Alan Mertsch in November.
“Because of the success of my main business, Ashley Moore Furniture, I was fortunate to be in a position where I could invest in this new venture.”
“We have a well-equipped woodwork area as well as a photographic studio, and space for soldering and amateur radio workshops.”
Following the death of his mum, 39-year-old Alan teamed up with his dad Norman and between them they threw all their energy into creating the Men’s Shed which he admits has helped them both get through a very difficult time.
As well as providing a positive and creative environment, the end products also benefit the local community such as a bookcase for a school and furniture for local charities.
Cramlington Town Mayor was very impressed when she visited the shed. Loraine De Simone said “What a marvellous enterprise this is! Thanks to the generosity of Alan and the support of his father Norman, Cramlington residents can now access these wonderful facilities. They can make and create while enjoying security and companionship. No-one judges anyone here – it provides a very therapeutic experience.”
Alan adds: “We have been so successful I’m already hoping to be able to expand and take on more members. I’m also seeking volunteers such as retired joiners who would be able to tutor our members. We are also affiliated to the National Association of Men’s Sheds.”
