Drink up and ditch the plastic!
A local councillor has teamed up with Concordia Leisure Centre in an initiative which aims to encourage everyone to reduce their use of single-use plastic water bottles.
Earlier this year Concordia took part in a ‘National Refill Day’, where for the whole day visitors could refill their drink bottles free of charge with fresh drinking water.
Cramlington Town Councillor Mark Swinburn thought the refill day was an excellent idea but felt that more could be done so following a meeting with the Leisure Centre manager a permanent dispenser is now in place that provides chilled drinking water.
Phil Evans, the General Manager at Concordia Leisure Centre said; “I am pleased to offer a refill station within Cramlington. It is our aim to encourage the local community to carry a reusable bottle which can be refilled within the centre”
Councillor Swinburn said; “There are more disposable plastic water bottles being sold in the UK than ever before, with another estimated rise last year. Northumberland is one of the leading authorities with our climate change work, and everyone can play a part, no matter how small, so why can’t we start by ditching some of this plastic waste? A reusable bottle makes much more sense. I hope this initiative can be introduced across further sites in Northumberland”
