Free School Meals will continue for children

October 12, 2020

Parents and carers of children in Northumberland who are eligible for free school meals are being reassured that these will continue to be provided.

Schools will provide meal options for all children in reception, key stage 1 or those who meet the benefits-related free school meal eligibility criteria.

Free school meals will also be provided to those who are eligible if they are self-isolating, have had symptoms or a positive test result themselves, are a close contact of someone who has coronavirus or are not attending school as a result of local lockdown arrangements.

Parents and carers are encouraged to speak with their school to discuss arrangements for their child dependent on their need.

Councillor Guy Renner-Thompson, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Children’s Services said: “For many, school meals play an important part of their day and it is important that they continue, even more so during this time. The Council will continue, as always, to support schools with their meal offer, and will help them work with their providers to ensure children who are having to stay at home receive a meal.”

It is important all children have access to healthy and nutritious food and through the free school meals offer this can be achieved. Healthy eating demonstrates a number of health and educational benefits including increased consumption of fruit and vegetables, an understanding from a young age of what a healthy diet looks like and using that learning to eat healthier at home.

Cath McEvoy Carr, Executive Director for Adult and Children’s Services said: “Some families rely on their child receiving a free school meal, so it is important that this a continued offer for them. Our schools are working hard to ensure this can be the case, but every school will be different, so please speak with them if your situation has changed or if you are concerned how this will work for you.”

If you are unsure if you are eligible for free school meals or not you can check online at https://www.northumberland.gov.uk/Education/Schools/Meals.aspx#schoolmeals
