Have fun with the Silly Squad and Northumberland Libraries

June 8, 2020

This summer youngsters are invited to to get silly!

Northumberland Libraries are calling for children to join in the fun and sign up to keep reading as part of Silly Squad, this year’s Summer Reading Challenge.

The Summer Reading Challenge is an annual event aimed at 4 – 11 year olds.

This year, with the current situation, the all-new digital aspect of the Challenge is launching earlier than usual to keep children reading over the Summer and support parents and carers with children already at home.

Silly Squad is a celebration of funny books, happiness and laughter – and it launched on Friday June 5.

A whole host of virtual events with guest celebrities and authors will take place on the Summer Reading Challenge Facebook page to mark the launch of the digital Challenge.

The online Silly Squad will entertain and engage children and families with uplifting content and reading recommendations.  Children are free to read anything that makes them happy – whether a favourite book at home or something new from our great selection of eBooks and eAudio titles which can be downloaded for free from our digital library – BorrowBox.

The Challenge website will be free to access and children can rate and review their books as they work towards their reading goal. It will also feature lots of fun videos, games, quizzes, and digital and downloadable activities.

“I feel the Summer Reading Challenge is extra important this year! How sensible to have a Silly theme. We’ve all had to deal with serious and scary issues, so it’s time for a bit of fun. There are so many comical and crazy children’s books to cheer us all up. Let’s get reading and get happy!” – Jacqueline Wilson, Summer Reading Challenge

Ambassador

We hope that lots of families will get silly for the Summer Reading Challenge. These are difficult times, and the Challenge offers an opportunity for families to have fun and be silly together.

Register to join the Challenge at sillysquad.org.uk or check out mylibrary.co.uk for further information.

Last, but not least…keep a look out for some very special events with Northumberland Libraries to be announced in the near future.  These include online sessions with the fantastic author and illustrator Liz Million, and a circus skills workshop with Circurama!
