Let’s shout about our young unsung heroes!
Definition: Unsung Hero, Someone who does a great job yet receives little or no recognition for that.
Recently Cramlington Town Council’s Youth Network began a quest…
The search was on for the town’s Young Unsung Heroes…we had heard about many good deeds from younger members of the community and Cramlington Town Council’s Youth Coordinator Steve Beaty decided it was about time these kind-hearted youngsters got the recognition they deserved.
So, having gained prizes in the form of a free meal from the generous and popular restaurant Nando’s, the hunt was on…
Through his contacts and via the Youth Network’s Facebook page, Steve quickly became aware of six deserving winners:
Ben (15) and Harry (15) were nominated by local rugby club Cramlington Rockets for volunteering with their popular Rocket Tots programme and for being a great example to other young members of the club.
Amber (15) was nominated by Cramlington United FC for her great work with the Girls Wildcats sessions and for maintaining a positive attitude in tough times.
Cramlington United FC also nominated Jack s (15) who not only plays for the junior section, but gives up every weekend to volunteer as kit man for the 1st and reserve teams.
Georgie (6) was nominated by mum Zoe for being her little hero. Zoe is 22 weeks pregnant with health issues, Georgie has a heart of gold. Every day she helps her mum with tasks such as vacuuming, washing and she even helps look after the family dog. Never once complaining, never once without a smile on her face.
Brody (5) was nominated by Cramlington Town Council’s Community Manager Maggie Martin, for keeping everyone’s spirits up during lockdown. Brody was born prematurely and suffers from chronic lung disease, yet he kept his whole street entertained by singing and dancing during the Thursday evening clap for key workers. Street happy, he then set his sights on his extended family by arranging weekly Zoom quiz nights, which of course always resulted in Brody breaking out a few songs and dance routines. Determined to keep people smiling, he now has his eyes set on creating a YouTube channel to cheer up anyone who is feeling down during these difficult times.
Youth Coordinator Steve said “Throughout Cramlington we have so many amazing young people and it’s been great getting to hear about their achievements. They really make a positive impact on the lives of others. In tough times like these it’s easy to overlook young people but here we definitely have six of the best.
In fact I have been so impressed by hearing about these young people, and I know there are more out there, I can announce that Cramlington Town Council’s Youth Network is going to continue with the Unsung Hero Awards on a quarterly basis.
These first winners of our Young Unsung Hero Awards are a prime example of the positive contribution youngsters give across the town. They have made a major difference to our community and I am extremely proud of them.”
