Manor Walks announces impressive energy savings
An initiative to change lighting to LED at Manor Walks has resulted in an impressive reduction in the centre’s energy consumption.
A statement on their website reads: At Manor Walks Shopping and Leisure we’re committed to supporting the environment and after the implementation of new environmental working practices, the centre has seen some amazing results in our energy consumption.
In 2019, the centre started a 2 year project to replace all lighting in the centre to LED which is now 80% complete with some significant results. LED (or light emitting diode) lighting is one of today’s most energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly lighting technologies making it a responsible choice and an attractive alternative to other forms of lighting.
In 2020 alone, the centre has saved 169,000 kwh (kilowatt-hour) or 50 tonnes of CO2. This is the equivalent consumption of 2,250 mature trees in a year.
Nick Lambert, Centre Manager at Manor Walks Shopping Centre, said: “It’s great to see that our conscious efforts to reduce our impact on the environment is starting to pay off. We’re only in the first year of our LED initiative and to see the cost and energy savings is encouraging. We want to let our community know about this not only because we’re proud of our achievements and its impact on the environment, but to encourage others to make some small changes within their homes.”
5 Top Tips for Saving Energy at Home
- Switch to LED Bulbs- They’re far more efficient than incandescent lightbulbs, last longer and can provide a cleaner, more natural looking light.
- Turn it off at the switch- Leaving electronics on standby means that electricity is still being used, turning these appliances off at the wall stops this from happening.
- Wash clothes on a lower temperature- Most of your washing can be done at a lower temperature such as 30 degrees and still provide the same results. Doing this will help to reduce your electricity consumption as your washing machine won’t need to heat the water to such a high temperature.
- Air dry wherever possible- Tumble driers can consume huge amounts of electricity. If it’s a nice day, dry your washing outside or leave it to air indoors. Be cautious of drying clothes directly on the radiator, you’ll prevent the heat from spreading through the room, which means your heating system will have to work even harder to bring the room up to temperature.
- Don’t boil a full kettle- Unless you’re making tea for eight people, there’s not much call to keep the kettle full. Not only does it take longer to boil, it requires more energy to do so. Simply filling for roughly the amount you need to use can save you money and time with every cuppa.
