New Disability Swing Installed at Alexandra Park

Cramlington Town Council has enhanced accessibility at Alexandra Park with the installation of a new disability swing, ensuring more children can enjoy the playground regardless of ability.

The swing, funded by Cramlington South East Councillor Paul Ezhilchelvan through the Members’ Local Improvement Scheme, has been specially designed to provide a safe and inclusive play experience. Featuring a supportive roller coaster-style seat, it enables children of all ages and abilities to swing comfortably.

For those requiring additional assistance, the seat includes a one-hand-operated harness and secure, comfortable grips, offering extra support when getting in and during use. Its upright design also allows children to maintain eye contact with carers while enjoying an open view of their surroundings.

Councillor Ezhilchelvan said: “It’s important that we continue to improve accessibility in our play areas so that all children have the opportunity to enjoy the equipment and play alongside others.”

Alexandra Park is already recognised as one of the town’s most accessible playgrounds, featuring a wheelchair-accessible merry-go-round among its inclusive equipment.

Even better news is that a second disability swing has been ordered for Eastfield play area! It is expected to be installed in the coming weeks, further expanding inclusive play opportunities across the community.
