Northumberland Archives achieve national accreditation

August 9, 2018

The Northumberland Archives has been awarded Archive Service Accreditation.

Managed by Northumberland County Council, Northumberland Archives is England’s most northerly archive service, who are responsible for collecting records relating to the history of Northumberland, its communities and people in record offices in Berwick-upon-Tweed and Woodhorn.

Accredited Archive Services ensure the long-term collection, preservation and accessibility of our archive heritage. Accreditation is the UK quality standard which recognises good performance in all areas of archive service delivery. Achieving accredited status demonstrates that Northumberland Archives has met clearly defined national standards relating to management and resourcing; the care of its unique collections and what the service offers to its entire range of users.

Cllr Cath Homer, Cabinet Member for Culture, Arts & Leisure: “This is fantastic news for Northumberland Archives. Our archive services have demonstrated that they have achieved UK national standards relating to management and resourcing, the care of unique collections and the service offer to their entire range of users.”
The Archive Service Accreditation Panel noted that: “We welcomed the application from the service, which is delivering strongly in a number of areas. Northumberland Archives are specifically commended for the range of excellent digital practice, good volunteering opportunities and clear recognition of the need to find means to reach out across the large geographical area covered by the community they serve. It is good to see the position Northumberland Archives has within Northumberland County Council, with close links to IT and other elements of information governance, providing a strong platform for future development.”
