Stepping up weed control

The unusually wet weather this year has resulted in an explosion of weeds across Cramlington. Normally weeds will be sprayed and allowed to die back but due to the heavy rains we have experienced this has been ineffective as the chemicals used are simply washed of before they can take effect.

In an effort to tackle the continuing problem, Cramlington Town Council has engaged contractors to mechanically cut back weeds in kerbsides and to chemically treat cut stems to stop their regrowth.

Work has already commenced and will extend to areas across the town over coming weeks.

Councillor Wayne Daley commented: “Weed treatment is normally undertaken by the County Council, but the problem has become so acute that we felt the Town Council should step in to support residents. I have already agreed with the County Council that they will look to change how they manage this going forward. Cramlington is leading the way on doing things differently and reacting to the needs of our community.  The changing nature of our summer weather means that we have to adopt different tactics to control weeds in areas where they’re not welcome.”
