Westmorland Way Roundabout
May 30, 2019
Through the County Council’s Local Transport Plan programme a new roundabout will be constructed at the Westmorland Way/Forum Way/Mellimg Road junctions to improve road safety and traffic flows.
The design of the roundabout is now complete and construction is due to commence on 10th June.
The roundabout layout includes provision for a 5th leg to allow for future development on the former police station site. A new footway/cycleway link from the existing subway beside the East Coast Main line footbridge to Forum Way will be provided.
A scheme such as this at an already busy junction will always cause disruption. We have worked during preparation of the scheme to minimise this disruption as far as practically possible and the works will be phased with two way traffic being available for the majority of the contract period. Access to Manor Walks car parks from the junction will also be maintained except for times where road closures will be required to complete surfacing works. Diversions will be in place during these times.
There will also be periods of weekend working and extended hours worked during the week. It is intended to have all of the works substantially completed and traffic management removed by the end of November so as to not affect shopping on the run up to Christmas.
